Become a Docent

We appreciate your interest in learning more about the Docent Volunteer Program at the Richard Nixon Presidential Library and Museum.  Joining the Docent Guild is a serious commitment of your valuable time.

A Docent’s main priority is to greet visitors and share approved information about the life and times of President Nixon. When you become a Docent your knowledge, your enthusiasm, and your overall spirit of service will make an enduring impression on our guests from around the globe.

What will be expected of me?

Once you complete training you will be expected to work a certain number of four-hour shifts during each month.  Those who are employed or are students for more than 25 hours each week will work a minimum of two times each month.  All others will work three times a month.  With our very flexible scheduling it is easy to select convenient times—weekdays, weekends, mornings, or afternoons.  Docents are positioned throughout the Library during its hours of operation, from 10 am to 5 pm, seven days a week. There are two shifts per day, a maximum of 3½ hours in rotating positions.

Getting Started

Three times a year the Richard Nixon Library & Birthplace Docent Guild conducts an Information Open House during which interested persons can attend a fast-passed two-hour meeting with working Docents.  This is a prerequisite to beginning training.  You will experience firsthand the roles, responsibilities, and rewards of being a Docent.  During the Open House you discuss the volunteer’s role followed by a Q & A session where you can ask any questions on your mind.
